Rodent control in livestock buildings — how to get rid of rats and mice effectively

Rodents – brown rats, black rats, house mice and field mice – are permanent, unwanted residents of livestock buildings. Livestock farms, cowsheds, piggeries, feed stores and barns offer them everything they need: warmth, shelter and constant access to food. A single rat eats about 20–30 g of food and drinks about 30 ml of water a day, but the losses it causes are many times the value of the feed it eats.

The scale of the threat

  • Material losses. Rodents destroy feed bags and containers, gnaw through the thermal and acoustic insulation of buildings, damage electrical cables (which can lead to fires) and chew wooden structures, panels and boards. In cowsheds and poultry houses they drive up heating and repair costs.
  • A sanitary hazard. Rats and mice carry many infectious diseases dangerous to people and animals: salmonellosis, leptospirosis (Weil’s disease), tularaemia and viral hepatitis. They contaminate feed and water with droppings, urine and hair.
  • A direct threat to animals. Rats can attack young animals and even bite farm workers. They nest in hard-to-reach places under floors and in walls, which makes them harder to eliminate.

Muribrom baits in our catalogue

Our catalogue has two ready-to-use Quimunsa baits in wax block form: one with brodifacoum and one with bromadiolone, both at 0.005% (50 ppm). The wax helps the block withstand moisture, so it is suitable for cowsheds, piggeries, feed stores and for baiting around buildings.

Muribrom Brodifacoum 0.005% Block: when rodents are resistant to other products

Brodifacoum is a second-generation anticoagulant. It works after a single feed on the right dose of bait, including on rodents resistant to other rodenticides. The effect is delayed by a few days, so rodents do not associate the bait with danger and the whole population can be reduced. It controls the house mouse, the brown rat and the black rat.

Muribrom Bromadiolone 0.005% Block: a block with a fixing hole

Bromadiolone is an anticoagulant that disrupts blood clotting in rodents. It works after a single feed, including on rodents resistant to standard rodenticides. The block has a central hole for fixing it on a rod in the bait station, so rodents cannot carry it elsewhere. It controls the house mouse and the brown rat, also in open areas and in sewers.

Bait stations, pastes and liquid baits

Quimunsa’s DIPTRON® range also includes lockable bait stations and baits in paste and liquid form. They are not in our catalogue yet. If you need them, write to us and we will check availability.

The principles of effective rodent control

Professional rodent control in a livestock building should follow a few principles: regular monitoring for rodents and a log of bait station checks; bait stations placed along walls, by doors and near food sources; the type of bait matched to the conditions in the building (paste in dry conditions, wax blocks in damp places and outdoors, liquid rodenticide where rodents look for water); and proofing the buildings against rodents – sealing gaps, vents and drain pipes.
